✔️ Why This Recipe is Great

Healthy Iced Drink: Matcha powder is packed with antioxidants and has been known to boost metabolism and improve brain function - add in your favorite milk and some sweetener and you've got a healthy, light afternoon treat.

Easy Tea Drink: This green tea drink recipe only requires a few simple ingredients and can be made in just a few minutes with a cup of ice.

Customizable Matcha Latte: You can adjust the sweetness level, milk type, and even add different flavors to create your own unique version of this drink.

    🥛 Ingredients

    Ingredients of iced matcha latte.

Matcha Powder: this green tea powder is the star of this drink, providing a unique and earthy flavor as well as many health benefits. Choose your brand carefully!

Hot Water: to create a concentrated matcha shot.

Milk: for a creamy and balanced matcha latte - I like coconut or macadamia milk for a creamier pick.

Honey: to add some sweetness, if desired; one tablespoon is usually enough.

Ice Cubes: to cool down the drink and make it icreasingly refreshing.

See recipe card for exact ingredients and quantities.

    📝 Substitutions and Variations

    • Sweetener: you can use agave syrup or maple syrup as the natural sweetener instead of honey, for a vegan matcha latte.
    • Milk Substitutes: you can use any type of non-dairy milk such as almond, soy, macadamia, or oat milk in place of the dairy.

Matcha Smoothie - add some frozen bananas, spinach, and protein powder to make this into a nutritious breakfast matcha smoothie.

Fruity Matcha Latte - add an ounce or two of fruit juice, such as orange or peach, to your iced matcha latte for a light fruity twist. For a heavier flavor blend, I like adding an ounce or two of passion fruit puree or mango puree, though every spring I like making strawberry iced matchas.

Matcha Frappuccino - blend all the ingredients together with the ice in your cup and top with homemade whipped cream for a decadent and indulgent treat.

🍵 How to Make an Iced Matcha Latte (Step-by-Step)

Step 1) In a small bowl, mix 1-2 teaspoons of matcha powder with 2 tablespoons of hot water until it forms a smooth paste (images 1 & 2).

Mix matcha powder with hot water.
Mix matcha powder with hot water until it blends smoothly.

Step 2) Add honey or your preferred sweetener to taste and stir well (image 3).

    Pro-Tip

For a creamier and frothier latte, you can use a milk frother to heat and froth your milk before pouring it into the glass.

Step 3) In a glass, add ice cubes and pour the matcha paste over them and pour in your choice of milk until the glass is about ¾ full (image 4).

Step 4) Top off with more ice cubes and enjoy your refreshing iced matcha latte!

    ☕ Storing Leftovers

An iced latte is best enjoyed fresh, and doesn't store well due to the ice cubes. However, you can prep your matcha paste in advance and keep it refrigerated for up to three days. When ready to enjoy, simply add the milk and sweetener of your choice, and then top off with ice cubes.

For a hot version of this drink, simply omit the ice and heat the milk before adding it to the matcha paste.

    👨🏻‍🍳 Expert Notes & Tips

Sift Your Powder: Make sure to sift your matcha powder to avoid any clumps in your drink and ensure a smooth texture.

Silkier Texture: For a frothier texture, you can use a milk frother to froth the milk before adding it to the glass.

Adjust The Sweetness: Add more or less honey according to your taste, or even add a dash of vanilla extract for flavor balance.

Mix it Up: Experiment with different types of milk (almond, oat, soy, etc.) to find your preferred flavor combination.

    🙋 Frequently Asked Questions

How much matcha for one drink?

Most green tea latte recipes call for 1-2 teaspoons of matcha powder per serving. However, you can adjust the amount to your preference - if you prefer a stronger matcha flavor, add more powder, and for a milder taste, use less.

Is it okay to have two matcha lattes?

Yes, for most people it's okay to have two matcha lattes, especially if you are using high-quality ceremonial-grade matcha powder. However, listening to your body and not consuming excessive amounts of caffeine in one day is a must - moderation is key to every aspect of our diet and lifestyle.

How does matcha compare to coffee?

Matcha and coffee both contain caffeine, but matcha also contains L-theanine, a unique amino acid that helps promote relaxation and mental clarity. This can result in a more sustained energy boost without the jitters or crashes often associated with coffee consumption.
